Overview

The Journal of Best Practices in Health Professions Diversity is a publication from the School of Health Sciences at Winston-Salem State University. Its mission is to provide a forum for discussing factors that influence the development and sustainability of a well-prepared health professional workforce from various disciplines. The journal is directed toward educators, policymakers, and the broader health community. It is a biannual publication that serves as a key resource for enhancing recruitment and retention efforts within health professions education and practice.

Although we are not currently taking print subscriptions, individuals can purchase print copies of the journal by searching in the main search tab. The journal is also available digitally in JSTOR’s Public Health Collection.

Aim and Scope

The Journal of Best Practices in Health Professions Diversity: Research, Education, and Policy (J Best Pract Health Prof Divers) is designed for educators, policymakers, and health professionals seeking evidence-based insights into strengthening the health workforce. As a biannual publication, it serves as a platform for exploring the factors that support or challenge efforts to build a robust, inclusive, and sustainable workforce across health disciplines.
Our commitment is to publish innovative manuscripts grounded in scientific research, theory, or philosophy that examine the underlying causes of health disparities, the structural and systemic influences on healthcare access and outcomes, and the strategies that enhance workforce preparedness and effectiveness in serving diverse communities.

Indexing

J Best Pract Health Prof Divers is a peer-reviewed publication, published by the University of North Carolina Press (UNC Press). It is sponsored by the School of Health Sciences at Winston-Salem State University, National Association of Medical Minority Education, Inc. (NAMME), and the North Carolina Alliance for Health Professions Diversity.

The J Best Pract Health Prof Divers is indexed through ProQuest, JSTOR (provides our journal wide access and international exposure), EBSCOhost databases, CINAHL® Complete (under Medical Education and Cultural Diversity subjects), Business Source Complete, Health Policy Reference Center among other databases. Lastly, numerous authors published in our journal that have government funded research including NIH have their manuscripts included in PubMed Central (MEDLINE database). We have been indexed since 2010 and have been in existence since 2007.

Submission Policy
Manuscripts submitted for consideration of publication must be an original contribution that has not been previously published and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. All persons listed as authors are expected to have made a significant contribution to the development of the manuscript. Authors are ultimately responsible for ensuring validity of published manuscripts.

All manuscripts will be reviewed by the Associate Editor prior to being assigned to external peer-reviewers. Final publication decisions remain the responsibility of the Associate Editor and/or Editor. Proofs of accepted manuscripts will be sent to the corresponding author for final review prior to publication. Extensive changes to the proofs may delay publication. The corresponding author is responsible for the entire content of copyedited articles and may incur charges should extensive changes to proofs be necessary to correct errors, other than printer’s errors.

International submissions are welcomed. All manuscripts including, international submissions, must meet standards of English used for professional publications.

Submissions by Emerging Scholars are welcomed. Emerging scholars are defined as persons who both completed their terminal degree within the past 5 years and have pursued a scholarly career for less than 5 years. Emerging Scholars should identify themselves as such at the time an article is submitted. Emerging scholars will be given additional assistance in developing articles for publication.
